The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of anthropometric, metabolic, and endocrine abnormalities as predictors of estimated average glucose and other biomarkers of dysglycemia in women with different phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This cross-sectional study included 648 women with PCOS and 330 controls. A single protocol of investigation was applied for all subjects. PCOS women were divided by phenotypes according to the Rotterdam criteria. Biomarkers of dysglycemia were considered dependent variables and anthropometric, lipid, and hormone alterations as independent variables using univariate and multivariate logistic regressions. Univariate logistic regression analysis, controlled for age and BMI, showed that many biomarkers of dysglycemia could be predicted by anthropometric, lipid, and endocrine variables. Multivariate logistic models showed that in non-PCOS women estimated average glucose (eAG) was predicted by lower TSH levels (OR=0.39; p=0.045); fasting glucose was predicted by increased T (OR=2.3). For PCOS, phenotype A, eAG was predicted by decreased HDL-C (OR=0.17, p=0.023) and high levels of free estradiol (OR=7.1, p<0.001). Otherwise, in PCOS, phenotype D, eAG was predicted by higher levels of HDL-C. The current study demonstrated that eAG was poorly predicted by anthropometric, lipid, and hormone parameters. Nevertheless, without adding significant benefits, it was comparable with other established markers of dysglycemia in women with different PCOS phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine synechiae (IS) is an acquired uterine condition that occurs when scar tissues (adhesions) form within the uterus and/or cervix, causing menstrual disturbance. However, approximately 50% of patients with IS are refractory to treatment. Therefore, other endocrine disturbances, such as gonadotropin disturbance, may affect treatment success. STUDY AIM: To analyze gonadotropin levels in women with and without IS. METHODS: Ten women with refractory IS experiencing amenorrhea since at least 6 months and nine with normal menstrual cycles (control group) were included in this study. Blood sample were collected every 10 minutes during a 4-h period. The serial ultrasound was performed in both groups for evaluating the cycle phase. Blood was collected when the follicles size was between 5-10 mm. Serum LH, FSH, progesterone and estradiol concentrations were measured. To detect LH and FSH pulses, the technique proposed by Santen and Bardin was adopted; therefore, one pulse was defined as a 20% increase in the concentrations as to the preceding point, followed by an important decrease. RESULTS: No differences were observed between the study groups at baseline. Estradiol levels were lower in the IS group than in the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant. During the first hour of monitoring, cumulative FSH pulsatile frequency of IS group was lower than one of control. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the estradiol levels of IS participants are lower than those of women with normal menstrual cycle. The role of this finding in the physiology of uterine synechiae requires further investigation.

Cervical cancer is one of the most frequent gynecological malignancies in Brazil, and most of the patients require pelvic radiotherapy as part of oncological treatment. Pelvic radiotherapy induces ovarian premature insufficiency in pre-menopausal women. This condition impacts the life quality and increases the risk of osteoporosis, obesity, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases in the middle and long term. Most of these patients have no access to hormonal replacement therapy. Techniques such as ovarian transposition have questionable results when aiming to preserve ovarian function. In this context, a promising alternative is the implantation of fresh ovarian tissue, outside the radiotherapy field, in the abdominal cavity (orthotopic implantation) or in other sites such as the forearm, breast, or subcutaneous tissue (heterotopic implantation). Here we report a successful case of autologous implantation of fresh ovarian tissue in the inner thigh of a young patient with advanced cervical cancer, who was a candidate for concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

The harderian gland (HG) is a gland located at the base of the nictating membrane and fills the inferomedial aspect of the orbit in rodents. It is under the influence of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and, because of its hormone receptors, it is a target tissue for prolactin (PRL) and sex steroid hormones (estrogen and progesterone). In humans and murine, the anterior surface of the eyes is protected by a tear film synthesized by glands associated with the eye. In order to understand the endocrine changes caused by hyperprolactinemia in the glands responsible for the formation of the tear film, we used an animal model with metoclopramide-induced hyperprolactinemia (HPRL). Given the evidences that HPRL can lead to a process of cell death and tissue fibrosis, the protein expression of small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRPs) was analyzed through immunohistochemistry in the HG of the non- and the pregnant female mice with hyperprolactinemia. The SRLPs are related to collagen fibrillogenesis and they participate in pro-apoptotic signals. Our data revealed that high prolactin levels and changes in steroid hormones (estrogen and progesterone) can lead to an alteration in the amount of collagen, and in the structure of type I and III collagen fibers through changes in the amounts of lumican and decorin, which are responsible for collagen fibrillogenesis. This fact can lead to the impaired functioning of the HG by excessive apoptosis in the HG of the non- and the pregnant female mice with HPRL and especially in the HG of pregnancy-associated hyperprolactinemia.

INTRODUCTION: Female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is considered a major public health issue. Physical therapy is an important conservative treatment; however, it is primarily limited by poor long-term compliance. Furthermore, surgical treatment entails significant risks. Therefore, new treatment techniques must be identified. OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of laser therapy and pelvic floor (PF) physical therapy for treating postmenopausal women with SUI. METHODS: This pilot study enrolled 40 women with a clinical and urodynamic diagnosis of SUI who were randomized into two groups: those who received erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser therapy implemented over three sessions with a 1-month interval (n = 20) and those who received physical therapy with supervision twice a week for 3 months (n = 20). In total, 16 women completed the treatment in each group. The patients were assessed for PF function using the modified Oxford scale and for pelvic organ prolapse using the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification System. The 1-h pad test and quality of life questionnaires, King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ), and Incontinence Quality of Life (IQOL) were also administered. Patients were re-evaluated at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. RESULTS: The mean patient age was 62.7 ± 9.1 and 57.9 ± 6.1 years, median Oxford score at baseline was 3 (2-4.5) and 4 (3-4), mean IQOL score was 79.8 ± 17 and 74.6 ± 18 for physical therapy group (PTG) and laser group (LG), respectively. For the amount of urine leak in the 1-h pad test evaluation, we found significance for the interaction of group and time points only for the Laser intragroup. The cure rate, that is, the rate of reaching an insignificant score in the pad test, at 6 and 12 months was 43.75% and 50% in PTG and 62.5% and 56.25% in the LG, respectively (p > 0.05). IQOL scores demonstrated considerable improvement in both groups (p > 0.05). Upon comparing the initial and follow-up results, the LG showed an improvement at all consultations, whereas the PTG showed improvements at 1, 3, and 6 months but not at 12 months after treatment. KHQ analysis revealed a considerable improvement in the quality of life (QOL) of patients over time, with no substantial difference between the groups. QOL comparison before and after treatment revealed that the vaginal LG improved more consistently in some domains. Only the PTG showed a significant increase in the mean Oxford score from pretreatment to 1 and 3 months after treatment (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. CONCLUSION: Both treatments are safe and have a positive influence on the impact of UI on patients' QOL. The laser caused a greater reduction in the urinary loss, as measured using the weight of pad test, at 6-month and 12-month after treatment without difference with PTG at the end of the follow-up.

Hormonal and metabolic factors may influence endometrial quality and interfere with the action of progesterone. Therefore, the aim of our study was to address this issue. Participants were recruited from an outpatient reproductive endocrinology clinic at an academic tertiary medical care centre. All subjects underwent endometrial biopsy (EB) in the follicular phase of the cycle prior to treatment. Thereafter, they were treated with micronized progesterone (400 mg/day × 10 days intravaginally) from days 14-28 of the next cycle. A second EB was performed between days 21-24 of the cycle (the second phase). The metabolic and hormonal serum levels were evaluated during the implantation window. EB samples were analysed using light microscopy for histomorphometric analysis. The endometrium of women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in the second phase demonstrated a uniform surface epithelium with less leukocyte infiltration and an absence of apoptotic figures compared to the control group. (p < 0.021). The thickness of the surface epithelium in the second phase of the PCOS group correlated positively with free and bioavailable testosterone values. The number of stromal cells increases with increasing insulin levels. Our results suggest that histomorphometric abnormalities of the endometrium persist and are linked to androgen and insulin levels despite progesterone supplementation in PCOS.

AIMS: To correlate the 'Residual Cancer Burden' (RCB) index with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in women undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy at the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo. METHODS: We analysed the medical records of patients with breast cancer who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and breast surgery, from 2011 to December 2017. Variables analysed were age, clinical and pathological staging, molecular subtype, number of recurrences or metastases, number of deaths, value and class of the RCB index. We used the Kaplan-Meier and the log-rank statistics to evaluate the possible association between RCB and OS and DFS. A regression model was used to determine the independent association of the RCB with the outcomes controlling for confounding factors. RESULTS: 347 patients were included in the analysis with a mean age of 49.39 years. Initial clinical staging was T3 in 57.9% of patients and 43.8% of patients had N1 axillary status. Survival analysis showed a statistically significant better prognosis for the RCB 0 (pCR) subgroup compared with RCB 1, 2 and 3 (log rank p=0.01). In a multivariate analysis, only the RCB classification showed a statistically significant correlation with DFS (RCB 1, HR 6.9, CI 1.9 to 25.4, p=0.004; RCB 2, HR 4.2, CI 1.6 to 10.8, p=0.03; and RCB 3, HR 7.6, CI 2.76 to 20.8, p=0.00). CONCLUSION: We demonstrated a positive and significant relationship between the RCB index and the risk of relapse and death.

PURPOSE: Gelfoam scaffold is a feasible and safe non-invasive technique for Adipose tissue-derived Stem Cell (ASC)-delivery in the treatment of frozen-thawed ovarian autografts. This study seeks to analyze the genes expression profile of rat frozen-thawed ovarian autografts treated with scaffold-based delivery of adipose tissue-derived stem cells. METHODS: Eighteen adult Wistar rats were distributed into three groups: Control (frozen-thawed only); Group 1 (G1) and Group 2 (G2) (frozen-thawed ovaries treated with culture medium or ASC, respectively). Both treatments were performed immediately after autologous retroperitoneal transplant with scaffold-based delivery. The ovarian grafts were retrieved 30 days after transplantation. Quantitative gene expression (qPCR) for apoptosis, angiogenesis, and inflammatory cytokines (84 genes in each pathway) were evaluated by RT-PCR. Graft morphology (HE), apoptosis (cleaved-caspase-3), neoangiogenesis (VEGF), and cellular proliferation (Ki-67) were assessed. RESULTS: In grafts treated with ASC, the apoptosis pathway showed the highest number of genes over-regulated - 49 genes - compared to inflammation cytokines and angiogenesis pathway - 36 and 23 genes respectively, compared to grafts treated with culture medium. Serpinb5 family was highlighted in the angiogenesis pathway and Cxcl6 in the inflammation cytokines pathway. In the apoptosis pathway, the most over-regulated gene was Capsase14. ASC treatment promoted the reduction of cleaved caspase-3 in the theca internal layer and increased cell proliferation by Ki-67 in the granulosa layer without altering VEGF. A mild inflammatory infiltrate was observed in both groups. CONCLUSION: ASC therapy in rat frozen-thawed ovarian autografts promoted an abundance of genes involved with apoptosis and inflammatory cytokines without compromising the ovary graft morphology and viability for short time. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the repercussion of apoptosis and inflammation on the graft in the long term.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequencies of iNKT cells and their subsets in patients with deep endometriosis. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted between 2013 and 2015, with 73 patients distributed into two groups: 47 women with a histological diagnosis of endometriosis and 26 controls. Peripheral blood, endometriosis lesions, and healthy peritoneal samples were collected on the day of surgery to determine the frequencies of iNKT cells and subtypes via flow cytometry analysis. RESULTS: The authors observed a lower number of iNKT (p = 0.01) and Double-Negative (DN) iNKT cells (p = 0.02) in the blood of patients with endometriosis than in the control group. The number of DN iNKT IL-17+ cells in the secretory phase was lower in the endometriosis group (p = 0.049). There was an increase in the secretion of IL-17 by CD4+ iNKT cells in the blood of patients with endometriosis and severe dysmenorrhea (p = 0.038), and severe acyclic pelvic pain (p = 0.048). Patients with severe dysmenorrhea also had a decreased number of CD4+ CCR7+ cells (p = 0.022). CONCLUSION: The decreased number of total iNKT and DN iNKT cells in patients with endometriosis suggests that iNKT cells play a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis and can be used to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

Prolactin (PRL) acts stimulating the mammary glands development, and its deregulation has been associated to the emergence of several types of tumors, including breast cancer. Breast cancer represents the most prevalent malignancy in women, and the second cause of death in several countries. This tumor can be arise due to several molecular alterations, among them PRL has been the object of increasing interest from researchers worldwide. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between elevated levels of plasma prolactin and breast cancer development. METHODS: A total of 158 studies were found in search databases (48 from PubMed, 69 from Scopus, 88 from Cochrane, 25 from Embase and 10 retrieved from the gray literature) after removing duplicates. Of these, 104 studies were excluded after title and abstract reading, and 54 studies were then read in full, of which only 14 were selected for this review because they had evaluated the association between PRL and breast cancer. Meta-analysis was carried out using the relative risk (RR), mean and standard deviation, confidence interval (95% CI), and the total number of patients for each study. Fixed- and random-effect models were used as applicable and, for the analysis. RESULTS: The meta-analysis showed a positive association between elevated levels of PRL and breast cancer occurrence (RR 1.26; 95%CI 1.15-1.37). Additionally, the patient sub-group analyses showed a positive association between PRL and invasive breast cancer (1.42; 1.24-1.60), ER+/PR+ (1.49; 1.23-1.75), and post-menopausal status (1.29; 1.16-1.43). CONCLUSION: The results showed a positive association between plasma prolactin levels and breast cancer, especially in women with ER+/PR + tumors, of post-menopausal age and those with invasive cancer.

BACKGROUND: The development of efficient strategies for managing high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV)-positive women is a major challenge when human papillomavirus-based primary screening is being performed. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of HR-HPV testing based on self-collection (SC) and HR-HPV testing based on collection by a health professional (HP) and to assess the potential usefulness of HR-HPV testing combined with testing with the biomarkers p16/Ki-67, α-mannosidase, and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 232 women admitted for colposcopy because of an abnormal Papanicolaou smear. The collected material underwent liquid-based cytology, HR-HPV detection, and immunocytochemical testing (p16/Ki-67, α-mannosidase, and SOD2). The gold standard was the histopathological result; the positive reference was CIN2+. RESULTS: The overall accuracy of HR-HPV testing was 76.6%; the results for the SC group (78.1%) and the HP group (75.2%) were similar. The positive predictive values (HP, 76.5%; SC, 80.0%), the negative predictive values (HP, 66.7%; SC, 64.3%), the positive likelihood values (HP, 1.35; SC, 1.36), and the negative likelihood values (HP, 0.21; SC, 0.19) were also similar. p16/Ki-67 showed higher sensitivity than the other 2 biomarkers: 78.1% versus 45.8% for α-mannosidase and 44.5% for SOD2. The specificities of the biomarkers were equivalent: 71.4% for p16/Ki-67, 77.8% for α-mannosidase, and 71.2% for SOD2. In the HP group, accuracy also leaned more heavily toward the final score (using α-mannosidase and SOD2) without statistical significance (80.8% vs 77.9%). The contrast with the SC group yielded the same level of accuracy. CONCLUSIONS: SC, when associated with testing with biomarkers, is as accurate as collection by HPs in the detection of women at risk for cervical cancer.

AIMS: To evaluate the concentration of hyaluronan acid and proliferation/cellular death in mammary gland of ovariectomized female rat after estroprogestative therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty ovariectomized female rats were divided into four groups with 10 animals/each: OG (vehicle); EG: (Estradiol, 7 days of treatment), PG (Progesterone acetate, 23 days of treatment), and EPG: (Estradiol, 7 days of treatment, and next Progesterone acetate, 23 days of treatment). Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, all animals were euthanized, the mammary gland removed, then, a fragment was immersed in acetone to quantifying of the hyaluronan acid biochemical method (ELISA-Like fluorometric assay), and a fragment fixed for 24 h in 10% formaldehyde in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) processed for immunohistochemistry method for detection of the cell marker proliferation (Ki67) and cellular marker death by DNA fragmentation the TUNEL method. RESULTS: The estradiol-treatment alone (EG) or associated with progesterone (EPG) affected the concentration of hyaluronan acid, increased cell proliferation, and decreased cell death compared to OG and PG (p < .05) in the mammary tissue. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the excessive reduction of HA in mammary tissue, as occurred with progesterone treatment, can lead to a breakdown of the extracellular matrix. These changes may be indicative of mammary pathology such as the development of tumor.

Conclusion: ASC therapy in rat frozen-thawed ovarian autografts promoted an abundance of genes involved with apoptosis and inflammatory cytokines without compromising the ovary graft morphology and viability for short time. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the repercussion of apoptosis and inflammation on the graft in the long term. HIGHLIGHTS The scaffold-based delivery therapy with adipose tissue-derived stem cells in the rat ovarian autografts seems to be the best option when compared to direct injection or systemic route. Ovarian grafts treated with adipose tissue-derived stem cells showed the highest number of genes over-regulated in the apoptosis pathway, compared to inflammation cytokines and angiogenesis pathway. Capsase14 was the most over-regulated gene in the apoptosis pathway. The treatment with adipose tissue-derived stem cells in ovarian grafts treated didn't compromise the ovary graft morphology and viability for short time.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the frequencies of iNKT cells and their subsets in patients with deep endometriosis. Methods A case-control study was conducted between 2013 and 2015, with 73 patients distributed into two groups: 47 women with a histological diagnosis of endometriosis and 26 controls. Peripheral blood, endometriosis lesions, and healthy peritoneal samples were collected on the day of surgery to determine the frequencies of iNKT cells and subtypes via flow cytometry analysis. Results The authors observed a lower number of iNKT (p= 0.01) and Double-Negative (DN) iNKT cells (p= 0.02) in the blood of patients with endometriosis than in the control group. The number of DN iNKT IL-17+ cells in the secretory phase was lower in the endometriosis group (p= 0.049). There was an increase in the secretion of IL-17 by CD4+ iNKT cells in the blood of patients with endometriosis and severe dysmenorrhea (p= 0.038), and severe acyclic pelvic pain (p= 0.048). Patients with severe dysmenorrhea also had a decreased number of CD4+ CCR7+ cells (p= 0.022). Conclusion The decreased number of total iNKT and DN iNKT cells in patients with endometriosis suggests that iNKT cells play a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis and can be used to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

Since the outbreak of severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the coronavirus disease 2019 has had a wide range of effects on human health. This paper summarizes the data related to the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 infection on human reproduction. Both the male and female reproductive tract express high levels of receptors and proteins needed for viral cell entry. There is presently no evidence that gametes are affected by the infection. Male fertility may be temporarily reduced due to inflammatory responses following infection. The endometrium is highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 cell entry; however, it remains unclear whether this could alter receptivity and embryo implantation. Menstrual cycle changes were reported in women who experienced severe infection; however, they tended to be reversible. For couples undergoing assisted reproduction treatment, the pandemic led to a significant psychological burden, with changes in lifestyle that could directly affect the success of the treatment. Human reproduction societies recommend screening all patients prior to cycle initiation and avoiding treatment of women with severe comorbidities until the pandemic is under control. Finally, for pregnant women, it is expected that the infection is more severe in women in the third trimester and in those with comorbidities. Those who are symptomatic for SARS-CoV-2 are more likely to have increased rates of prematurity and intrapartum fetal distress than those who are asymptomatic. Vertical transmission cannot be completely ruled out, but neonatal infection rates are low. Vaccination appears to be safe and is indicated for use in pregnant and lactating women because the benefits outweigh the risks.

OBJECTIVE: To assess overall adrenal mineralocorticoid/glucocorticoid/androgen steroidogenesis in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) patients and the possible effect of prednisone on adrenal hormones and ovarian reserve. METHODS: Fifty-one adult cSLE (ACR criteria) patients and 23 healthy controls were evaluated for adrenal steroidogenesis including mineralocorticoid (progesterone, deoxycorticosterone, aldosterone), glucocorticoid (17-OHprogesterone, 11-desoxycortisol, cortisol), and androgen (dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate, androstenedione, total testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone) hormones. Ovarian reserve assessment included follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, anti-Müllerian hormone, ovarian volumes, and antral follicle count. RESULTS: The median of current age [29.11 (19-39.8) vs. 30.8 (19.6-42.1) years, p = 0.502] was similar in adult cSLE and controls. Regarding mineralocorticoid/glucocorticoid, the median of progesterone (p = 0.003), 17-OH progesterone (p < 0.001), and 11-desoxycortisol (p = 0.036) were significantly lower in patients compared to controls. All androgen steroidogenesis hormones were reduced in the former group [dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (p < 0.001), androstenedione (p = 0.001), total testosterone (p = 0.005), and dihydrotestosterone (p < 0.001)]. Further comparison of patients with and without current use of prednisone and controls revealed a predominant impact on adrenal glucocorticoid and androgen steroidogenesis with reduced levels of 17-OH progesterone [0.17 (0-0.5) vs. 0.27 (0.1-2.9) vs. 0.33 (0.1-0.8) ng/mL, p < 0.001], dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate [0.155 (0-0.6) vs. 0.49 (0.1-1.6) vs. 1.11 (0.1-2.6) µg/mL, p < 0.001], androstenedione [0.56 (0.2-4.4) vs. 1.7 (0.5-4.5) vs. 2.33 (0.3-3.8) ng/mL, p < 0.001], total testosterone [12 (12-167) vs. 16 (12-28) vs. (16.5 (0-50) ng/d, p = 0.002], and dihydrotestosterone [92.68 (11.8-198.5) vs. 160.62 (37.9-842.1) vs. 188.3 (71.3-543.9) pg/ml, p < 0.001] in patients under this drug. In addition, patients with this therapy had reduced median ovarian volumes [4.14 (2-12) vs. 7.13 (2-25.7) vs. 5.18 (2.4-17.3) cm3, p = 0.028) that was not associated with cyclophosphamide cumulative dose (p > 0.05). The median prednisone dose was 15/mg/day (2.5-40). CONCLUSIONS: We provided novel evidence that cSLE patients have an overall androgen/glucocorticoid/mineralocorticoid adrenal suppression. Furthermore, low/moderate prednisone use seems to underlie these abnormalities and may also adversely affect ovarian reserve, independently of immunosuppressants. OBJECTIVE: Systemic arterial hypertension and obesity are major public health problems that increase risks of serious cardiovascular diseases and kidney failure as well as increase mortality. Substances that can alleviate these problems are desirable. We evaluated the beneficial effects of nutritional supplementation with gamma-linolenic acid in postmenopausal hypertensive women. METHODS: This was a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study involving 96 postmenopausal women. Participants were divided into two groups either receiving 1,000 mg of borage oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid + vitamin E (drug) or only vitamin E (placebo) capsules for 6 months. They were followed up monthly to assess the impact on systemic blood pressure and body composition. To verify group homogeneity, Fisher's exact and Student t tests were performed. To evaluate differences in various parameters between the two groups and at various times, repeated measures analysis of variance was performed, with Bonferroni correction. RESULTS: The power of the test was calculated based on the difference in the mean systolic blood pressure between baseline and after 6 months of treatment in the placebo group and in the drug group. A 92.9% test power was found with a 95% confidence interval. There was a significant reduction in the systolic and diastolic pressure as well as a significant change in waist-hip ratio (P < 0.01) in the drug group as compared with the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with borage oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid had significant beneficial short-term effects without showing any adverse effect. There remains a need for further studies to evaluate long-term benefits.
